Spina Fountain
Palma di Montechiaro
Spina fountain
It is a circular tub, used as a drinking trough, from the Roman era, probably from the late imperial period (2nd century AD), in perfect working order. It is located in the municipality of Palma di Montechiaro in the Spina district, along the ancient Roman consular road, the AGRIGENTUM-SYRACUSIS coastal road.
After 18 centuries the fountain is substantially intact, apart from the bust positioned on top of the column in the centre, probably a representation of the consul who had that stretch of road built, a sculpture, which has been stolen. The circular tub, made, like the column, in local limestone, is a UNIQUE specimen; no other examples of artifacts of the kind have survived either in Italy or in the territories of the ancient Roman provinces.
