The construction of the San Carlo Tower, just beyond the mouth of the Palma river, dates back to 1639 by Carlo Tomasi, first duke of Palma, who obtained permission from Philip IV of Spain and had defensive purposes given the continuous incursions of Saracen pirates on the Palmese coast.

The fortress was supplied with weapons, war tools and an adequate number of soldiers.

It rises with a quadrangular body on a base in the shape of a truncated pyramid. There are traces that indicate the presence of a drawbridge and corbels on which the machicolations must have rested.

Next to the Tower a small church was built, which no longer exists today, with the title of “Santissimo Rosario” (Most Holy Rosary), led by a chaplain, for the soldiers' mass. The defensive structures were maintained until 1820.
